Biography
The first white act on Motown to score a number one hit. Full name Charlene Duncan, she was Stevie Wonder's protege and signed to Motown in 1973. I've Never Been To Me was first issued on an offshoot of the Motown label in 1976, reaching number 97 on the US hot hundred. By the time the revived single became a top ten hit in 1982 (it peaked at number three in the US before reaching the top of the UK chart), Charlene was working as a sweet shop assistant in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK. Follow-up was another reissue, "It Ain't Easy Comin' Down". A newly recorded duet with Stevie Wonder, "Used To Be", was targeted at the christmas market but did not take off.
