St Winifreds School Choir
"There's No One Quite Like Grandma"
Entered Top 20: 22 November 1980
Chart peak: 1
The budget album label Music For Pleasure secured their only hit single with the first release on their short-lived 900 series (the biggest names to appear during the sequence's year of terror were The Grumbleweeds, and comedy duo Cannon & Ball). The UK school choir led by 8-year-old lisping soloist Dawn Ralph beat John Lennon to the christmas number 1 spot after failing to hit the previous year with "Bread & Fishes". An earlier line-up of the album-oriented act had also backed Brian And Michael on the chart-topping "Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs", and Michael Coleman wrote the b-side of this hit, "Pinocchio". The choir's music teacher turned down the follow-up "My Mum Is One In A Million" which was a minor hit for the Children Of Tansley School instead.
